Environment

According to a report published in 2007* by the Ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement et des Parcs (Québec Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Environment and Parks), the waste management sector alone was responsible for 7.5 % of Quebec's total greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. Solid waste landfills are the principal source of the sector's greenhouse gas emissions at 94.3 %, whereas wastewater treatment and garbage incineration represent only 3.2% and 2.5 % of the sector's total emissions respectively.

Every day at the Lachute landfill site, Lidya Energy harnesses some 127,000 cubic metres of biogas and uses it to produce electricity. As such, the company contributes to the elimination of 390,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.

In addition to enabling the production of green and renewable energy, the revalorization of biogas offers another major benefit to the environment: when it is closed some time around 2065, the Lachute landfill site will have become completely stable, making it well suited for community use, such as a park, or for real estate development.
